Feb 27, 2007 -- Time Trials

We shared a most beautiful day as a team at our Time Trials meet on Saturday.  I felt that we had a great follow through by our athletes, the enthusiasm was high, the efforts were honest and sincere, and the results were very encouraging.  A huge thank you to the parent helpers for doing such a terrific job with the timing and the breakfast.

REVIEW:  I felt that the performances were very encouraging!  We registered some pretty good results and in some cases even better than I expected at this time of the season!  We have begun the process to fill our events with athletes that will contribute points in our league meets (4 weeks away).  What remains now is to use the next three weeks of practice dual meets and invitationals to sharpening up our skills for the league meets and to develop the young athletes into varsity performers.    We have practically all of our events for the girls pretty well filled with a pretty good competitor.  What we need here is to build some depth with our first time athletes and to strengthen our sprints a bit.

We are pretty thin of league level athletes for the boys in many of our events.  We hope that we can get some of our dinged up athletes back soon so that we can move forward with our plan to open up the league season with a win over Foothill.  We still have a lot of work to do to reach the level of challenging for the league title but we are a lot closer now than we were before the time trials.  I totally believe that our work ethic, the desire of our athletes to be successful, and the winning tradition of our track team will bring even brighter results in the coming weeks.

Congratulations to all of you on your performances at the time trials.  You can all look at yourselves in the mirror and be proud of what you did on Friday and Saturday.  I want to wish all of you a most successful (improvement defines success in our program), meaningful, worthwhile, and enjoyable season.  Lets all move forward in a positive way by taking advantage of our individual talents and the expertise of your coaches to reach your potential.    Please check your results on our web page (www.gvarvas.com) and let us know if we might have mistyped your results.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:  Kyle Wolff (repeats last  year’s feat) and Conrad Wozniak (three awesome times)  are the runners  of the meet and Cassie Stanislaw and Philip Tramposh are the field event athletes.  Michael Callahan, Adam Garrett, Roxy Barker, and Chelsea Hilliard are the rookies of the meet.  Congratulations all for being a wonderful example for the rest of the team.  Your efforts and marks should inspire all of the other athletes to match your achievements.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE:

1)  Track Meet on Thursday against Segerstrom HS, Beckman HS, and Oxford Academy HS at Beckman HS at 2:45pm.

      a)  The buses will leave at 1:30 sharp.  You will be dismissed

           at 1:15 to dress.

      b)  Warm up as a team (every single athlete) at 1:50 (as

soon as we get off the bus).

      c)  Dress at lunch (or come to school in your track uniform

and sweats) so that you will not be late.  Do not go on

the Beckman campus once we get there.  They have

           school in session.

      d)  Entries are posted on our web page and on the HJ shed!

      e)  Hurdle crews, block crews, and pit crews will be posted on

Wednesday.  Even though this is not our home meet, we

           all help during the meet.

      f)  Relay teams will practice on Wednesday.

2)  Earl Engman Relays (running and field events) on Saturday.

      a)  Earl Engman will take place at Kelly Filed at El Modena HS

(3920 E Spring St, Orange, CA 92869).  WHS to 405 North to

55 North to Chapman East to N Prospect and left to Spring

           and right.

      b)  This meet runs the shuttle hurdles relay (4 athletes), the

           4x100, 4x200, 4x400,4x800, 8x100, 8x200, and the

distance medley relays for the running events; the HJ, LJ,

and Shot Put for the field events.  Many frosh/soph athletes

will have a chance to participate in this varsity event.

Additionally, we will be having a second team in the distance

medley and the 4x800 so that our younger athletes will get

some experience in these types of meets.

      c)  Entries will be posted on Friday (we will use the results of

Thursday’s meet to make the final selections for the relays).

3)  Inclement weather in the picture

      a)  It is anticipated that rain will be falling this week.  This

might change the schedule of all that is planned.  Be

flexible!  Don’t be naïve about a little rain.  It is something

very common to the rest of the country and they are still

           alive.  Dress appropriately.

      b)  If it rains during the day and our track is too muddy to

workout, our workouts will be on the bike path for the

majority of the athletes and at the Irvine Stadium at 4:00pm

for our top athletes and those that want to get a great

           workout in.

      c)  All athletes are expected to come to school with their

workout clothes and be ready for training.  At minimum, we

will be working out in the weight room, the hallways, and

           the gym.

      d)  The coaches will determine if the workout will be altered.

4)  T-Shirts

      a)  If you did not pick up your shirt on Saturday, do so at the

end of practice or before practice this week.  Wear your

t-shirt at our meets instead of other t-shirts.

5)  Uniforms

      a)  The few of you that have not picked up your uniforms yet,

bring your money and forms to room E-208 during snack

or lunch or before school and pick up the permission to get

your uniforms from the equipment room.

6)  Sweat Shirts

      a)  We have our shipment of the embroidered Red “Woodbridge

Track & Field” Sweats in for the parents and any athletes

that would like to purchase them.  They look great to wear

anywhere (especially at the track meets).  The cost is $35

but we only have 30 of them.  First come first served.  Make

the checks payable to WHS.  Bring the money is ASAP.  They

go very fast as you know from past years.

7)  Missed Time Trials

      a)  A few individuals and the whole boy’s throwing group did not

attend Saturday’s activity.  Very disappointing!  We have no

place on the teams for athletes that will not follow through on

team expectations.  If you are not going to follow our rules

then you need to join a team that will allow you to do what

you want instead of what the team expects.  All of you that

did not attend the meet on Saturday (and were not excused

from the meet by me) will run 10 laps before your practice

begins today.  This is the last “second chance” any gets for

the season.  The next time anyone chooses to ignore our

rules, that athlete will be dropped from the team.

8)  Laguna Hills (Thursday at WHS) and the Irvine Invitational (Saturday) are the meets next week.  More info will follow.
