Apr 21, 2008 -- Trabuco Dual Meet, OC Championships

Coming back from our Spring Break we jumped right into track and field and made this past week a pretty busy week.

REVIEW:  At the dual meet on Wednesday, our Girls Varsity team lost its first meet of the season to Trabuco Hills to drop into second place in the league title competition.  In fact, only our Boys Frosh/Soph team was able to outscore their opponents.  Our season records thus far are:  Girls Varsity (3-1), Boys Varsity (1-3), Boys Frosh/Soph (3-1), Boys JV (2- 2), and Girls JV (2-2).

In the Trabuco meet, our runners performed well but we lacked the field event help to make the results come our way.  Our girls ran very well but we only scored 3 of the 36 points in the long, triple, high, and pole vault jumps.  This has been a thin area for us and with our athletes in the HJ, LJ, TJ not being able to perform at our normal level made for not so favorable results.  We did get lots of help from the other field events (shot put and discus) where we scored 11 of the 18 points.  We did win 6 of the 10 running events (200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 4x400).  For the boys, Philip Tramposh enjoyed a very good day as did Brandon Herrick, Adam Garrett, and Shane Burglas.

At the Orange County Championships, we enjoyed some great moments.  Our Girls Varsity team finished 2nd (65-69) to Dana Hills in the team competition.  The following ladies scored points for the Warriors:  Christine Babcock finished 1st in the 1600 with a new Orange County meet record of 4:45.96 and 1st in the 3200 with another meet record of 10:19.98 and earned the Distance Athlete of the meet.  Gabrielle Scott finished first in the 400 with a PR of 56.63 and 4th in the 200, Kyle Wolff finished 2nd in the 400 and 3rd in the 800 with a new PR of 2:18.07, Becky Crouse finished 5th in the discus with a 118' 0” throw and 9th in the Shot put with a 33' 5”, the 4x100 relay team of Gia Trevisan, Gabrielle Scott, Erica Teen, and Kyle Wolff finished 7th and the 4x400 relay team of Gabrielle Scott, Sarah Toberty, Christine Babcock, and Kyle Wolff finished first with a new season best time of 3:58.12.  Congrats to all.

Medal winners at the OC Championships included:  Philip Tramposh, Michael Callahan, Shylo Lontayao, Elie Abate, Derrick Fleming, Brooke ten Bosch, Andy Jacobs, and Hector De Los Santos.  If I missed someone, let me know.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:  Andy Jacobs enjoyed a tremendous break through in the 110m HH (16.81) and Hector De Los Santos registered an excellent PR in the 300m IH (40.62).  Christine Babcock (3 first places in the County meet), Gabrielle Scott (two first place finishes), and Kyle Wolff (an excellent finish in the 800 at the county meet) were highly instrumental in the 2nd place finish at the Orange County Championships.

WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1)  Huntington Beach Dual Meet on Wednesday at 2:45pm at WHS (our first and only home meet his year).

  • The meet will start at 2:45pm with the Girls JV 1600 and then proceed with the regular order of events for the rest of the meet.

  • Hurdle crews, block crews, pit crews, and scoring crew will be the same as for our meet against Foothill.  We will post these on the shed.  Please repeat the great job you all did with the Foothill meet so that the meet will run very smoothly.

  • We will have our attendance meeting after the meet in the stands.

  • Huntington Beach will present a different challenge for us on the girls’ side.  They are super strong in the field events and could go 1-2 in some of them.  These kinds of points in their strong events call for us to load up at their weak events of distance and sprints.  Expect to be called upon to do some extra events at this meet.

  • For the boys, they surprised us last year and can do the same this year.  They have very good competitors in practically each event.  We will have to take advantage of our home facilities to neutralize some of their strengths.

  • This will mark the last home (or any) dual meet for some very special athletes (our senior athletes).  We want to celebrate their great contributions to our track successes with first a victory in the meet (how could we possibly end their careers with a loss at home) and our team barbeque.  The team barbeque will take place on Friday due to 8th grade night at WHS on Wednesday.

2)  League Entries are going to be finalized this week.  Check the shed when posted to make sure that you have an entry to the meet.  Each school has 4 entries per event and 5 bonus ones.

3)  League Prelims for the runners and League Finals for the lower-level field events will take place next Tuesday, April 29th at 3:00pm (for the field events) and 4:00pm (for the running events) at Irvine Stadium.  The bus will leave at 1:30pm.

4)  League Finals for all the running events and the varsity field events will take place next Friday, May 2nd starting at 4:00pm for field events and 5:00pm for running events at Irvine Stadium.  The bus will leave at 3:00pm.

5)  The end-of-the-season barbeque will be on Friday after practice at 4:00pm (if there exists any interest in it).  Invite your parents and family.

6)  League Championship practices will be on Saturday:  sprinters and distance runners at Irvine Stadium at 8:00am and field events at WHS at 9:30am.

Good luck at the last meet of the regular season and let’s get ready for the post season.
