Babcock sets two school records, breaks the Orange County 3200 record and records the #4 California and the #8 U.S. times ever in the 3200!!!

REVIEW:  While other folks have been working on their sun tans, visiting places, being “couch potatoes” and re-charging their batteries these past couple of weeks, our track & field teams have been busy with all of that stuff but also competing and preparing for the end of the season with some great workouts.  Here is a short summary of what has taken place lately.

1)  El Toro Dual Meet results:  WHS Boys 47, El Toro 89; WHS Girls 72, El Toro 64:  The Warriors Girls Track team, ranked third in Orange County, won a closely contested track meet against El Toro and remain undefeated for the season.  The meet was clinched with a victory in  the last event of the day, the 4x400 meter Relay in a time of 4:04.  Excellent contributions were made my Gia Trevisan (100 individual victory, 3rd in the 200, and part of the winning 4x100); Bree Todd finished 2nd in the 100 and then came back with a huge triple jump to win that event in a PR 33' 6”; Sarah Toberty and Christine Babcock scored 21 of the 27 possible distance points; Kyle Wolff, Gabrielle Scott, Becky Crouse, Nicole Belz, and Erica Teen.

The other scores were:  Frosh/Soph Boys 72-62; JV Girls 64-63; JV Boys 78-55.  Even though our boys lost to the talented El Toro team, I was very proud of our efforts and the competitiveness of our athletes.  We were able to win in some of the events (PV, HJ, 400, 4x400) and scored well in some of the others.

2)  Trabuco Invitational

  • Senior Christine Babcock, in her first invitational 800 meter race ever, set both a school and meet record with a time of 2:10.15.  This time breaks the 22-year-old school record of 2:11.23 previously set by Sheri Smith in 1986.  Her time is still the fastest 800-meter time in the state this year.

  • Junior Shane Berglas won the 3200 meter seeded race with a time of 9:42.50, a thirteen-plus second PR, placing him third on the school's Top-10 Performers List.

  • Nicole Belz (PR best of 9' 6”); Trevin Pinto (PR 12' 0” in the PV); Kyle Wolff and Gabrielle Scott (3rd and 4th in the 400 Invitational, respectively); Sarah Toberty (season best 2:20.80); Jennie Krauser (won the Frosh/Soph Girls 800 with a PR of 2:29.51); Bryan ten Bosch (1600 PR 4:51.59); Scott Muniz (PR 42.43 in the 300 IH); season best 4:01.03 in the 4x400 for the girls were some of the other outstanding performances.

3)  Arcadia Invitational:

  • Senior Christine Babcock, participating in the 3200 against 2007 World Junior (under 20 yrs of age) champion Jordan Hasay, set a new school record (10:04.03) in the 3200, breaking her own previous record by 11+ seconds, in an amazing race.  Christine took over the lead to the race coming into the 4th lap and held the lead until the final 50 meters when she was passed.  The two athletes raced side-by-side for 3150 meters.  This was a new Orange County Record, the #4 time ever in California, and the #8 all-time performance in the U.S.

  • Kyle Wolff finished 4th in the seeded 400 with a time of 57.01 and then came back in less that an hour to run a huge 2:16.9 800 leg in the Distance Medley Relay.

  • The Distance Medley Relay improved by over 22 minutes from our first meet and finished 7th with a time of 12:21.18.  Brooke ten Bosch (1:13.1, 2:31.7, and 3:52.8 relay time for the 1200), Gabby Scott (56.8 relay time), Kyle Wolff (1:06.9 and 2:16.9 relay time), and Sarah Toberty (1:14.3, 2:31.6. 3:51.6 and 5:12.3 relay time) were the members of the team.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:  Shane Berglas, Bree Todd, Sarah Toberty, Kyle Wolff, and Christine Babcock.

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE:

1)  Trabuco Hills Dual meet on Wednesday at Trabuco Hills High School.  WHS to Jeffrey and Left; to I-5 South; to 133 Toll Road North; to 241 South towards Santa Margarita; to the second Portola Road exit and turn Right.  Stay on this road as it turns into Santa Margarita Parkway to the high school.  You should be able to turn Right into the first driveway after El Toro Road and park in the grass area on the top part of their fields or by the tennis courts.

  • The bus will leave at 1:15pm, you will be dismissed from your 5th period class.  Please be dressed in team uniform.

  • Entries will be posted on Tuesday.

  • The league championship for the girls will be on the line.  To win the championship outright (we tied with Trabuco Hills last year for the title), a lot of our athletes will have to come up with their best performances of the season.  We are capable of doing that.  It should be an exciting and fun meet!
