Woodbridge 3, Northwood 0: The Woodbridge boys' volleyball team remained undefeated in Sea View League play as the Warriors swept Northwood Thursday at Northwood. Woodbridge, behind strong efforts from Jonathan Druary, Justin Johnson and Travis Waddell, won 25-16, 25-13 and 25-18, to improve to 2-0 in league and 9-6 overall. The Timberwolves fell to 1-1 and 4-5 overall.
Waddell and Jeff Kerchner got the Warriors off to quick start as Woodbridge built a 17-9 lead in game one. Waddell was a major force throughout the match at the net as he disrupted the Northwood attack. "We worked on our focus and didn't let down today," said Waddell, a 6-6 senior middle blocker. "Our 13 seniors are helping us come together as a team."
In game two, Woodbridge darted out to a 10-2 lead. However, Northwood battled back and cut Woodbridge's lead to 14-10. Michael Lakin and Scott MacDougall then sparked an 11-3 run and Woodbridge won going away. "We did what we had to do to win," Lakin said. "We made sure we didn't lose our momentum. We stayed on top and avoided sliding down."
Woodbridge coach Donnie Rafter said it was a good team performance. "We came in here and took care of business," Rafter said. "We couldn't afford a let down match. We didn't make many mistakes. I was impressed with (Jonathan) Druary's play. He had six kills and four aces and had an outstanding match for us." Kerchner recorded seven kills and MacDougall added six for the warriors. "We corrected well and did the basics well today," Johnson said. "However, we still have a lot to work on as a team."
In game three the Timberwolves were able to hang around. A key block by Northwood setter Andrew Ogden closed the gap to 18-15. But MacDougall and Ryan Gonzalez led a late rally as the Warriors closed out the game, 25-18, to secure the match.
