Mar 31, 2008 -- Northwood
Warrior Track & Field Smoke Signals -- Our Girls Varsity remained undefeated for the season as they defeated Northwood by the score of 81-55. Our Boys Varsity suffered its first defeat of the season as Northwood came out on top by the score of 57-79. Our Boys Frosh/Soph narrowly defeated Northwood by the score of 70-62, while the JV teams (boys and girls) lost their dual meets.
REVIEW: We continue to develop more and more into the type of a team that we are striving to become. In many cases, our performances were impressive. We were able to either score the points we needed with easy efforts (we need easy efforts at some of the meets so that we can conserve some of our energies for the second half of the season) or we came up with new PRs to earn the needed points.
Our girls registered victories in the 1600m (Christine Babcock), 4x100m Relay (Gia Trevisan, Gabrielle Scott, Erica Teen, Kyle Wolff), 100m HH (Teen), HJ (Bree Todd and Amy Dunford), 100m (Trevisan), 800m (Sarah Toberty), 300m LH and 400m (Wolff), PV (Nicole Belz), and the 4x400m Relay (Scott, Toberty, Babcock, Wolff). These victories coupled with 2nd place finishes by Brooke ten Bosch in the 1600m, Becky Crouse in the Shot Put and Discus, Clarissa Lara in the 3200m, Teen in the 300m LH, Scott in the 400m, and Trevisan in the 200m made for an easy meet for the Lady Warriors.
Our boys enjoyed victories in the 400m (Adam Garrett), 800m (Derrick Fleming), PV (Colin Faulkner), 300m IH (Hector De Los Santos), and the 4x400 Relay (De Los Santos, Michael Callahan, Brandon Herrick, and Garrett). We also enjoyed 2nd place finishes by Scott Muniz in the 110m HH, Philip Tramposh in the HJ, Trevin Pinto in the PV, De Los Santos in the 400m, Danny Antrim in the 800m, Garrett in the 200m and Fleming in the 3200m. However, Northwood finished 1st and 2nd in six events (1600m, LJ, 100m, SP, Discus, and TJ) but we finished 1st and 2nd in only three (800m, 400m, and PV).
We experienced some negative behavior at this meet for the first time this year and that got in the way of our focus with our boys. We did not execute our sharp relay passes, our starts in the sprints, our moves in the distances, and we did not hit our normal marks in the throws or jumps. These obviously turned the boys’ meet against us. I hope that letting this meet slip through our hands will upset us enough to return to the form we have enjoyed in the first 4 weeks of the season.
ATHLETES OF THE MEET: Hector De Los Santos enjoyed a very successful day and hit a new PR in the 300m Intermediate Hurdles (also placing him on the Top-10 All-Time Performers list). Sarah Toberty was part of the most exciting race of the day as she came from behind to battle for her first place finish in the 800m.
THIS WEEK’S SCHEDULE:
1) WEDNESDAY: Team Picture Day at 3:30pm. All athletes are to be dressed in their uniform and to bring their completed order form/envelopes.
2) THURSDAY: Dual League Meet against El Toro at El Toro High School with the first event at 2:45pm (WHS to Alton and East to Toledo and Right. The school is on Toledo just before you get to El Toro Road. You could take 405 to El Toro Road, go Left and then turn Left on Toledo).
- The bus will leave at 1:20pm. You will be dismissed from 5th period class.
- 3/16" needle spikes for all the events at this meet.
- We are asked to setup and sit up in the stands on the finish line side. Only people in the infield will be the ones warming up for their races.
- El Toro is the defending Sea View League champion on the boys’ side and our girls’ meet last year went down to the 4x400m Relay. Needless to say, they will be formidable opponents and we will need to be letter-perfect to stay on course with our main goals as a team. They have an excellent brand new facility and therefore our best marks of the year (from everyone) will be expected. Anything short of our season and life-time PRs will not do if we don't win the event. Be ready.
3) FRIDAY: Trabuco Invitational - Part I emphasizing distance races. At Trabuco Hills High School. WHS to Jeffrey and Left to Toll Road (N) to 241 South towards Santa Margarita to the second Portola Road exit and turn Right. Stay on this road as it turns into Santa Margarita Parkway to the high school. Parking will be a nightmare. You should be able to turn right into the first driveway after El Toro Road and park in the grass area on the top part of their fields. For Saturday, they should have a shuttle from the church on El Toro Road. Check www.runningmustangs.com and our web page for parking directions.
- The entries will be posted on the shed. Read the times carefully.
- Transportation will have to be provided by the parents and the coaches. Make the proper arrangements.
- Great opportunity for our distance athletes to register huge PRs.
4) SATURDAY: Trabuco Invitational - Part II, contining at Trabuco Hills High School.
- The bus will leave at 7:00am. Parking will be very difficult with all the construction taking place on that campus. Parents will have to really allow a lot of time if you are to make your son or daughter's events.
- This should turn out to be a great meet for improving on our marks. The competition will be excellent, the facilities are good, and the weather looks to be OK.
5) MONDAY – FRIDAY (4/7 to 4/11): Spring Break. Three workouts minimum to stay in good standing for competing in the Trabuco dual meet. Workout plans will be discussed on Friday during 6th period and will be posted on our web page later.
6) SATURDAY (4/12): Arcadia Invitational for elite runners. At Arcadia High School. Entries will be announced by Arcadia on Wednesday or sooner.
