Mar 24, 2008 -- Foothill
Our Varsity teams remained undefeated for the season with a victory over Foothill this past week.
REVIEW: The Boys won 81-51 and the Girls won 75-59. The Boys Frosh/Soph and Boys JV teams also won, while the Girls JV lost.
Key performers on the boys side included Jordan Wozniak (4:36.4 in the 1600 meters), Shane Berglas (9:55.2 in the 3200), Danny Antrim (winning the 800), Adam Garrett (51.9 in the 400), Hector De Los Santos (42.5 in the 300 IH and second in the 400), Scott Muniz (PRs in 110m High Hurdles, 300m Intermediate Hurdles, and Long Jump), and Evan Rude (a huge 125' PR in the Discus and a 36' PR in the Shot Put). On the girls side, Christine Babcock won three races (1600m, 800m, 3200m), Kyle Wolff had four wins (4x100m Relay, 400m, 300m Low Hurdles, 4x400m Relay), Gia Trevisan (first place in the 100), Gabby Scott (scored in all 4 events and won the 200), and dependable Becky Crouse (won the Shot Put and the Discus).
I felt that having the meet at the Irvine Stadium helped us focus a little more. Additionally, winning the opening events (relays) and then following these victories with outstanding performances in the distance events made for an easier meet than I expected. Foothill has an excellent distance crew but we neutralized that strength and controlled the meet from that point on.
As I mentioned at our practice on Friday, the Woodbridge Track tree has taken roots and is full of blooms. The only question is: are these blooms going to produce fruit? Are we going to continue to work hard and improve? Are we going to have 100% of us committed to our team goals? I hope so! It is a lot of fun to perform at this high level.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Jordan Wozniak ran a gutsy race for a PR to ignite the team. Gia Trevisan came from behind to win the 100m and give us a big lift. Rookie of the meet was Taylor Perez with two impressive wins (100m, 200m).
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE/ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1) Northwood Dual Meet at Northwood High School at 2:45pm (WHS to Culver and right - to Portola and right - to Yale and left).
- The bus will leave at 1:30pm and you will be dismissed at 1:15pm. Dress at lunch.
- The first race will be at 2:45pm (JV 1600s) followed by the relays. Field events start at 3:00pm.
- This is a very important meet for us in many ways. Northwood has some very talented athletes and if we want to keep our league title hopes alive, we will have to put forth our best efforts thus far. We have enjoyed some very intense competition this year thus far so I think we will be ready for the meet. I expect them to be a bit tougher than the other teams that we have defeated thus far. Competing at their track and in front of their school mates and parents will make them a little tougher but we should be able to handle that pressure and not be intimidated. Each of our varsity athletes will have to rise to the occasion and perform at their highest level once again.
- Entries will be posted by Wednesday.
- Saturday practice is mandatory for Varsity athletes at 8:30am at Irvine Stadium.
- Tuesday’s practice starts at 6:30pm at Irvine Stadium.
