May 7, 2007 -- Sea View League Finals

The league finals were a very exciting and fun meet for our athletes.

REVIEW:  So many competed very well, achieved best marks of the season and earned some special prizes (league titles, medals and a spot in the CIF playoffs).  League Finals results: V Girls: Co-champs for 2007, V. Boys: 5th, , B JV:2nd, F/S boys 5th, JV girls 2rd.  Congratulations to all of the athletes on their performances at the League Finals. What a great finish to our season. As coaches, we were hoping that our training plans would produce our best results of the season at this meet. The performances were vintage Woodbridge Track. We competed with tenacity and enthusiasm and confidence and we came away with some special prizes.  We had numerous league championship performances including Christine Babcock’s 800-1600-3200 triple individual victories, Kyle Wolff’s 400 and 300 LH double individual victories, Cassie Stanislaw HJ victory, the 4x400 girls varsity championship, Adam Garrett in the F/S 400, the F/S boys 4x 1600, Clarissa Lara’s JV girls 1600 victory and Hector De Los Santos 400.  The CIF qualifiers include:  Scott Belz (400), Marjorie Strong (200), Kyle Wolff (300 LH, 400), Christine Babcock (1600, 3200), Sarah Toberty (1600), Erica Teen (100 HH), Cassie Stanislaw (HJ), Becky Crouse (Discus) and the girls’ 4x1 (Strong, Stanislaw, Teen, Wolff) and 4 x 4 (Wolff, Toberty, Babock, Stanislaw) relays.   Everyone gave a great effort and everyone can be proud of his or her achievements, as we coaches are proud of everyone.

Our girls missed the league title outright by 7 points.  We are very proud of that.  Our team performed well all season long.  We could have won the title out-right if things went perfect for us in the meet.  They hardly ever do (work out as drawn on paper).  We picked up point in some areas we figured we would not but then we lost some points in areas we thought we would.  That is sports!  We are very proud of our accomplishments this year.  On to the CIF podium now!!

ATHLETES OF THE MEET:  Christine Babcock (also the girls’ league MVP) and Kyle Wolff (also the runner athlete of the league) for the girls and Scott Belz (only boys’ CIF qualifier) and Conrad Wozniak for the boys.

THIS WEEK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS:  CIF prelims on Saturday at Moor Park H. S. (4500 N Tierra Rejada Road in Moorpark) starting at 11:00 a.m. for field events and 12;00 noon for running events. The bus will leave at 8:00 from Woodbridge (WHS è 405 North è 101 N towards Ventura èCA 23 N towards Fillmore and exit on Tierra Rejada Road and go left). It should take about 2 hours on the bus and about 1:30 in a car. The schedule of the events will be posted on the shed and can be found on our web page.

We have many solid CIF spots at this meet. We should be able to advance a lot of our athletes to the CIF Finals. We will need to approach this meet with a lot of emotion in order to advance. My experience is that a lot of prospective CIF scorers do not make it to the finals b/c they have a let down from the league meet. We cannot afford to do that. The remaining meets demand total preparation (high enthusiasm, high confidence and a tenacious competitive attitude). We will intimidate and will not be intimidated!

Off-Season training for the rest of the athletes. Each of you will be expected to be dressed out each day and be at practice by 2:15 (earlier than usual) and will be dismissed to go home at 3:20. During this time, you will be expected to carry out a work out each day, lift weights three day a week and work on your individual specialty events (HJ, PV, LJ, TJ, throws, hurdles, distance, and sprints).

Be sure that you check in for attending at the end of each day. We will not go looking for you. If you miss the stretching, drills, sprints, etc it will count as one of your absences. EIGHT non-participating days (excused or otherwise) during this period will earn you an “F” for the class for the 4th quarter.

Uniforms must be turned in during this week in order to not lose credit with an F in the class. Avoid hard feeling by following through on your responsibilities. I cannot begin to tell you about past athletes that had to take IVC PE in order to graduate because they either did not dress out each day during the 4rth quarter or did not take care of the other responsibilities.

Our banquet will be on Monday, June 11, 2007 at WHS (Bar-b-que and awards). If you or your family has taken interesting pictures during the season, can you please bring them to me or Coach Antrim for our slide show as soon as possible? You will get them back.

Cross Country next fall. We are going to have a very exciting cross country season next year. We will possibly go to Hawaii for a meet, and we should have a possible State Team with the girls and CIF finalists  for the boys. In order for us to continue with the progress we made this season and the fun we had with our performances at league finals, we need to sign up for cross country in the fall if we are not in a fall sport. The endurance, strength, conditioning and preparation we will get for next year’s track season will be unmatched. Being in 6th period alone will give us November, December and January to work on our events. We cannot do that after school.

If you are not going out for football, boys’ water polo, girls’ volleyball, girls’ tennis, cheer or girls’ golf, you must sign up for cross country/track conditioning if you are going to be part of our team for the 2008 season.  6th period soccer does not provide enough conditioning for our track season.  We will expect you to be with us if you intent to receive a varsity letter next season a minimum of three days each week.

If you are planning to participate in track for the 2008 season, sign up for the Warrior Summer Camp to work on your field events or hurdles or sprints for a minimum of three days each week for 6 weeks.

Physicals for the 2008 season (every sport) will be given the week of our banquet.  Listen for announcements and be sure you plan to get your physical at this time for next year.  They only cost $25.00, they are here at WHS. This is the best way to get that requirement for participating in sports next year out of the way. It is cheap, it is easy and it will save you plenty of time and money and hassles. Please make plans to be here at WHS by 5:30 for the physical. Pick up a clearance card ahead of time and have your parent’s signature on it before you come.

On behalf of the coaches on this year’s team, we want to thank you for your efforts, cooperation and the exciting performances. Congratulations on your achievements. We hope that your participation was enjoyable and worth the time you put in your training.
