Apr 23, 2007 -- Trabuco Dual, OC Championships
REVIEW: At the dual meet on Thursday, the Girls Varsity pulled of the upset we needed to take over sole possession of 1st place in league for the season. Unfortunately, in our other divisions, Trabuco Hills earned the victories to hand our F/S and JV boys the first defeat of the season (both were close competitions). Our season records thus far are: Girls Varsity (5-0), Boys Varsity (2-3), Boys Frosh/Soph (4-1), Boys JV (4-1), and Girls JV (3-2). Additionally, if we take under consideration the non-scoring meets, our season record would be Girls Varsity (10-0), Boys Varsity (4-6), Boys Frosh/Soph (7-3), Boys JV (7-3) and Girls JV (6-4).
In the Trabuco meet, we enjoyed upset victory performances in the 4x100 relay and by Becky Crouse in the both the Shot Put and the Discus and a 2nd place finish by Grace Carlson in the High Hurdles. These upsets, coupled with our normal performances by our talented athletes, were enough to eek out a 73-63 victory over the previously undefeated Trabuco Hills Mustangs. We dominated in our strong events by placing 1st and 2nd in the 800, 1600 (by Christine Babcock and Sarah Toberty) and the HJ (Cassie Stanislaw and Taylor Beadle) and placing first in the 400 and 300 hurdles (by Kyle Wolff) and then we secured our 2nd and 3rd place points in the 100 and 200, PV, SP, 200 and Triple Jump to seal off the victory.
At the Orange County Championships, we enjoyed some great moments. Our Girls Varsity team finished 3rd (2 pts out of 2nd) in the team competition. Christine Babcock finished 1st in the 1600 with a new Orange County record of 4:48.81 and 1st in the 3200 with the second fastest 3200 ever in the County and earned the Distance Athlete of the meet. Kyle Wolff finished 2nd in the 400 with a PR 56.94 and fifth in the 300 LH with another pr of 46.57. Cassie Stanislaw finished 2nd in the HJ with a 5’ 4” jump and fifth in the 400 with a 58.90. Sarah Toberty finished 5th in the 800 with a season best of 2:19.36, the 4x100 relay ran the season best of 50.02 to earn points and the 4x400 (Wolff 57, Toberty 59, Strong 61, and Babcock 59) relay finished 4th.
Outstanding non-scoring efforts were turned in by Erica Teen who ran a PR 300 LH of 48.63, Clarissa Lara who ran a PR 1600 of 5:27.84, Becky Crouse who threw a PR discus of 111’ 7”, Bobby Bishop who ran a PR 1600 of 4:34.84, Conrad Wozniak who ran a season best of 4:27.17 (aren’t we elated with the late-season charge that Conrad is mounting) and an exciting Frosh/Soph Boys 4x400 that ran a season best of 3:42.31 (Fleming 54, Pham 56, ten Bosch 56, and Callahan 54).
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Becky Crouse pulled off the upsets of the meet at the Dual meet. Grace Carlson gave Trabuco Hills a pretty strong message that they were not going to beat us at our den with a most aggressive 100HH race. Bobby Bishop keeps creeping up on that magical 4:30 barrier with his 4:34 run at the OC Championships. Christine Babcock and Kyle Wolff enjoyed a tremendous OC Championships. Michael Callahan jumped 5’ 6” at the dual meet and ran a great 4x400 leg at OC.
WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS
1) Huntington Beach Dual Meet on Wednesday at 2:50pm at Huntington Beach HS (WHS to 405 north to Euclid off ramp and go right. Follow this street for about 6 miles to the Huntington Beach HS. The street will change names to Ellis and then to Main as you pass Beach Blvd). The HS is by Sea Cliff Shopping Center).
a) The bus will leave at 1:00pm. You will be dismissed
from 5th period so be back from lunch on time to board
the bus.
b) Huntington Beach will present a different challenge for
us on the girls’ side. They are super strong in the
field events and could go 1-2 in some of them. These
kinds of points in their strong events call for us to load
up at their weak events of distance and sprints. Expect
to be called upon to do some extra events at this meet.
c) For the boys, this is the weakest team in the league
and we can expect to see many of the Frosh/Soph
athletes at the varsity level to get some experience
for next year and to shore up points needed to
secure the victory.
2) League entries are going to be finalized this week. Check the HJ shed when posted to make sure that you have an entry to the meet. Each school has 4 entries per event and 5 bonus ones.
3) League Prelims for the runners and League Finals for the lower-level field events will take place next Tuesday at 4:00pm at Trabuco Hills HS.
4) League Finals for all the running events and the varsity field events will take place next Friday starting at 5:00pm at Trabuco Hills HS.
5) Gold Cards are in my room.
6) End-of-the-season Bar-B-Que will be on Friday after practice @ 4:00pm (if there exists an interest in it). Invite your parents and family.
7) Web Page problems: We are experiencing encoding problems with our web page (our server changed their software and the new software does not support the FrontPage Extensions we use for our web page). We think we might be able to correct them at the near future. However, if anyone knows or has a server that supports FrontPage Extensions and can host our web page, let us know. If you want to eliminate the boxes in the text, right-click on the text, then choose/click encoding and then click on Western European (ISO) instead of the Unicode now checked-off.
