Apr 1, 2007 -- El Toro, Trabuco Invitational
REVIEW: Woodbridge vs. El Toro scores: Boys Varsity - ET 103 WHS 33; Girls Varsity - WHS 71 ET 65; Boys Frosh/Soph - WHS 73 ET 63; Boys JV - WHS 103 ET 23; Girls JV - ET 77 WHS 59. Other than getting smacked pretty good on the Boys Varsity side (the score could have been even more lopsided), we had a pretty good meet against one of the top teams in OC. Our Girls Varsity enjoyed a near-perfect meet. Each and every one of our athletes performed at the expected level or above. We went in the meet needing to win 10 of the 16 events and we ended up winning 11. We also needed to finish 1-2 in the 1600 and 3200 to off-set their strength in the discus and shot put and we did do just that. Erica Teen stepped up to join CIF seasoned Christine, Kyle, Cassie, Marjorie and Sarah to make a big difference in the meet. “White girl” did a great job on the relay and the 400 for our team. We enjoyed many other special performances from our younger athletes including three come-from-behind victories from Adam in the 400 and the 4x400 and from Michael Callahan in the 200, we swept the Pole Vault in the Boys Frosh/Soph as we did the Triple Jump. Our Boys JV dominated most of the events and our JV girl hurdlers scored a huge number of points.
At the Trabuco Invitational, PRs and seasons bests were established by many of our athletes. The distance crews started the ball rolling and our veterans finished it with a great 4x400m Relay. Christine Babcock established a new meet record by 12 seconds or so in the 1600 by running her best time of the year thus far (4:49.12), Derek Fleming broke 5 minutes in the mile (4:56.02) and had a PR in the 800 (2:13.07), Bobby Bishop ran 10:02, Bryan ten Bosch ran 4:51, Clarissa Lara broke 2:30 in the 800 (2:29.05), Madison Murphy won her race with a PR (5:30.02), Jordan Wozniak knocked off a couple of seconds off his PR in the 3200, Kyle Wolff enjoyed a “double 7” performance (57 in the 400 and 47 in the 300 low hurdles), Sarah Toberty ran 59.9 on the relay and 2:21 in the 800, Cassie showed the “bull-dog” in her for the first time this year by running 58 to hold off LB Poly in the 4x400, Michael Callahan ran 55.4 in the 400 and high jumped 5’ 4”, Scott Belz had a PR 12’ vault, Danny Antrim ran his season best 2:03 and both of our throwers (Becky and Caitlin) threw over 30 feet.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Erica Teen ran very well in the hurdles and scored some big points for the team against El Toro. Michael Callahan ran an impressive 55.4 in the 400, high jumped 5’ 4” and won the 200 and triple jumped at the El Toro meet and Derek Fleming enjoyed two PRs at the Trabuco Invitational.
WEEKLY SCHEDULE/ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1) Dual Meet on Thursday against Northwood at WHS at 2:50 pm.
a) The team warm up starts at 2:20 p.m. Track Meet assignments
will be the same as last week.
b) This is a very important meet for us in many ways. This is the
first time in our school history that we will be facing our "sister
school" Northwood. They will be pumped to stick us with a loss.
They know how we have dominated the Irvine schools in track.
In our school’s history, the Irvine girls and the University boys
have never defeated WHS in a track meet while the Irvine boys
have beaten Woodbridge 2 times and the University girls once.
Northwood is our cross-town rivals and our pride is on the line.
Northwood has a good team and the meet should be very close.
Obviously, we need everyone to really be ready.
2) Arcadia Invitational on Friday and Saturday. We will be running the 3200 with Christine, the 4x400 for the girls on Saturday night and the 4x1mile for the boys on Friday night.
3) Next week’s meet will be at Rim of the World HS on Saturday. The team will be traveling up on Thursday and staying overnight for 2 days. Athletes involved in this Invite will be working out 4 days while everyone else will workout for three days. Practice times and workouts will be discussed on Friday at our team meeting.
4) Gold Cards will be available on Wednesday. Be the first ones to get them and sell them for yourselves.
5) Enjoy the week! We will be having our Spring Break next week.
