Mar 5, 2007 -- Segerstrom et al, Earl Engman Relays

We enjoyed a most wonderful, and in some cases, spectacular start to the 2007 season.  Our athletes enjoyed themselves and they competed with enthusiasm, determination and tenacity in most cases.  Our results were impressive!

REVIEW:  On Thursday, both the boys and the girls outscored the other three teams collectively (we scored more points than the other three teams put together).  The weather was excellent, the facilities were real good and the follow through by our athletes made this meet a most fun meet.  We enjoyed very nice performances from our veteran athletes (Conrad Wozniak double victories in the 800 and the 1600, Christine Babcock’s 1600 and 3200 double, Kyle Wolff’s 400, 300 LH double, Cassie’s 5’ 2” HJ victory and her LJ and TJ victories, Andrew Keimach’s 100, 200 victories, to name a few) and we discovered some promising talents in Roxy Barker, Chelsea Hilliard, Adam Garrett and Michael Callahan.

On Saturday, we competed in a tough Division II in the Earl Engman Relays and our athletes earned medals in many races.  Even though the high winds (20-30 mph) got in the way of PR marks, our athletes performed excellently and we came away with some special prizes:  impressive victories in the Distance Medley for the girls (Murphy, Barker, Toberty, Babcock), 4x800 for the girls (Toberty, Lara, Murphy, Babcock), 4x400 for the girls with the fastest time in Southern California this year thus far (Wolff, Toberty, Babcock, Stanislaw), 5’ 4’ inch HJ by Cassie, 2nd place DMR for the boys (Bishop, Garrett, Hamblin, C. Wozniak), 2nd place in the 4x800 for the boys (J. Wozniak, Antrim, Hamblin, C. Wozniak) and a slew of 3rd and 4th place finishes.

The enthusiasm, successes, and efforts that our athletes put on would help to motivate many more of our athletes to want to be part of something special like the meet we had on Saturday.  I want to congratulate our athletes and challenge them to continue to work hard so that these successes would be repeated at even more competitive meets than the one we had this past week.  Our future opponents (Laguna Hills, Mater Dei, Esperanza, etc.) will offer stiffer opposition for us.  If we continue to work hard and get our late-starting athletes in better racing form, the results will continue to turn out in our favor.

ATHETES OF THE WEEK:  Clarissa Lara and Bobby Bishop for the distance events, Philip Tramposh and Cassie Stanislaw for the field events, Andrew Keimach and Roxy Barker for the sprints.
